The mythology of Vesta / Mitología de Vesta

Vesta was the firstborn daughter of Ops and Saturn, the eldest sister of the first generation of the Olympian gods. According to the Vesta myth, she was swallowed by Saturn and later rescued by Jupiter. She used to be represented in a long dress, many times with her head covered by a veil. Vesta is the goddess who never leaves home, Olympus, and is never involved in the struggles and wars of gods or mortals. As a warm-hearted goddess, she represented the divinity of the home and defended the life of the family, so families used to entrust themselves to her when they went through some misfortune or obstacle. She was worshiped before the other gods at all parties and banquets, as she was the oldest and most precious of the Olympian goddesses. An oath made on your behalf was the holiest of oaths, no matter what situation it was taken in. It was also very common to use her image in the homes of young people who were going to acquire knowledge, far from their homeland. Their priestesses, called Vestals, were in charge of guarding the sacred fire in the temples at all times.

Vesta era la hija primogénita de Ops y Saturno, la hermana mayor de la primera generación de los dioses olímpicos. Según el mito de Vesta, fue tragada por Saturno y posteriormente rescatada por Júpiter. Solía ser representada con un vestido largo, muchas veces con la cabeza cubierta por un velo. Vesta es la diosa que nunca abandona el hogar, el Olimpo, y nunca se involucra en las luchas y guerras de dioses o mortales. Como diosa de corazón caliente, representaba la divinidad del hogar y defendía la vida de la familia, por lo que las familias solían encomendarse a ella cuando atravesaban por alguna desgracia u obstáculo. Era adorada antes que los otros dioses en todas las fiestas y banquetes, puesto que era la más antigua y preciosa de las diosas del Olimpo. Un juramento hecho en su nombre era el más sagrado de los juramentos, no importa la situación en la que se hiciera. También era muy común usar su imagen en las casas de los jóvenes que iban a adquirir el conocimiento, lejos de su tierra natal. Sus sacerdotisas, llamadas vestales, eran las encargadas de vigilar en todo momento el fuego sagrado en los templos.
